Cavity Wall Insulation

Under ECO, you could qualify for free cavity wall insulation in a number of different ways. It could be because of the income-related benefits which you receieve, or it could be because of the area in which you live, or even the property construction.

What is Cavity Insulation?

Loft Insulation

Heat rises, and an un-insulated loft could be losing you more heat and money than you may think. By insulating your loft free of charge, you will start to see lower heating bills and the heat which is generated by your boiler will stay within your home for longer.

External Wall Insulation

Up until recent changes in the Governments grant system, EWI has been a very costly measure. However, if you have a solid wall property, part-funding is now available to have your external walls clad with highly efficient insulation to reduce your bills.

Qualifying for Free Insulation

Funding for insulation has been split in to three categories, you can qualify because of the income related benefits which you receieve, the style/construction of the property in which you live or even your specific postcode area.

It is important for private tenure home owners to know that it is not always free to those in receipt of benefits, you may receive no benefits at all and live in a relatively wealthy area, but because your property is three storeys or has a narrow (less than 50mm) cavity wall, then it can still be free.

The benefits of Home Insulation

By insulating your walls and/or loft, you can start to see huge savings on your monthly energy bills. Imagine going out to the shops on a cold winters day, with a vest on... well, you wouldn't, would you? You would go to the shops wrapped up in a thick jacket, because it keeps the heat in and the cold out. In this instance you can imagine your body to be the 'boiler', it is important to keep that heat in as best as possible, this is where cavity wall, loft and external wall insulation comes in.

Cavity Wall Insulation

Insulating a Cavity Wall

If your home was built after the 1920's, the chances are that its walls are constructed using a cavity. To insulate a cavity wall, engineers will drill a pattern of small holes on the external elevations of your home, these holes are then filled with a highly efficient material such as a white wool or bead type product, the holes are then re-pointed to match to the original as best as possible.

Loft Insulation Grant

Insulating a Loft

Insulating an empty loft is an extremely cost-effective way of reducing your monthly bills and cutting down your carbon footprint. Current regulations are set to 270mm and the material used is generally large blankets of varying thickness mineral wool. This is laid at joist level for maximum efficiency. It is important that the insulation is laid evenly across the total area as to avoid cold spots.

External Wall Insulation Grant

Insulating an External Wall (EWI)

Solid wall properties have always been harder to treat, and more expensive. But, it also offers one of the highest efficiency improvements available. ECO can help to fund this measure, but in most cases it is not fully funded. External Wall Insulation is the process of applying adhesive panels to the exterior of a property, these panels are then clad with a range of materials, or even rendered which can then be painted in a colour of your choice.

I don't get benefits, can I get free insulation?

In short, yes. There is a common misconception that you need to be in receipt of benefits in order to qualify for free home insulation, this is not the case. Under the Governments ECO scheme, if your property sits withing a low income postcode area (lots of social housing etc) then you can qualify automatically for a 100% grant. Also, if your home is classed as hard to treat (HTT), which means its cavity walls are less than 50mm wide, is three storeys or it requires remedial works then you could also qualify for a free insulation grant.
